What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session
If you've never been to therapy before, the first session carries a lot of unknowns - and a lot of that anxiety is just about not knowing what's going to happen. So let's take the mystery out of it.
Here's what your first session at Illinois Valley Counseling Services looks like, step by step.
Before You Arrive
When you call or request a call back, our office will:
- Ask a few questions about what you're looking for, so we can match you with the right therapist
- Verify your insurance benefits ahead of time - at no charge - so there are no surprises
- Confirm your appointment time and answer any questions you have
That's it. No lengthy intake forms over the phone, no pressure.
Paperwork (It's Quick)
When you arrive, you'll complete a short set of standard forms - contact information, insurance details, and consent for treatment. Everything is confidential and secure. We'll have all the paperwork ready on-site for you to fill out when you get here.
The First Conversation
Your therapist will start by introducing themselves and asking what brought you in. There's no script you need to follow and no "right" way to talk. You can share as much or as little as you're comfortable with.
Expect your therapist to ask questions like:
- What's been going on lately?
- How long have you been feeling this way?
- What would you like to be different in your life?
- What have you tried so far?
The goal of the first session is simple: for you to feel heard, and for your therapist to understand enough about you to suggest a direction that fits.
You're in Control
This is your session. You can pause, ask questions, say "I don't want to talk about that yet," or ask for clarification. A good therapist won't push you further than you're ready to go - especially in session one. Building trust is part of the process, and it takes the time it takes.
You Might Not "Fix" Anything Yet - and That's Normal
One of the most common misconceptions is that the first session will be heavy or that you'll leave with everything resolved. In reality, the first session is groundwork. You're getting to know each other, setting goals, and deciding together whether this therapist is the right fit. Sometimes the best outcome of session one is simply: "I can do this."
What to Bring (and What Not to Worry About)
- Bring: your insurance card, your ID, and any questions you have.
- Don't worry about: preparing a speech, being "interesting" enough, or having a clear diagnosis. None of that is required.
- Wear: whatever makes you comfortable. There's no dress code.
A Note on Fit
Therapy works best when you feel safe with your therapist. If after a session or two it doesn't feel like the right match, say so. We'll happily help you transition to another clinician on our team. Finding the right fit is part of the process - not a failure.
